Akureyri Hospital is a multidisciplinary hospital serving North and East Iceland It is also Iceland’s back-up
hospital. The accident and emergency ward is open 24 hours a day and treats
all accidents and more serious illnesses.
Staff and facilities
Around 600 members of staff are employded, 55 of whom are specialists in the main medical specialities.
Our facilities include:
- 3 fully equipped operating theatres
- an intensive care department
- a radiology department with state-of-the-art equipment (CT, MRI and ultrasound)
- a well-equipped laboratory department
Education
As a teaching hospital, clinical education in various fields within the healthcare sector for the University of
Akureyri and the University of Iceland is provided.
Akureyri Air Ambulance Service
Akureyri is the centre for air ambulance services in Iceland. These flights are staffed by emergency medical technicians/paramedics and flight physicians where necessary. The air ambulance services
arranges medical flights in Greenland as requested
Aircraft
The aircraft, King Air B200, carries state of the art medical equipment on board. The air medical flight service can provide everything from
basic to critical care and neonatal transport.
